A number of Lunar Orbiter cameras were made by the Kodak company for the Apollo project. Five of them were used to photograph possible landing sites on the Moon. The areas photographed were selected from photos of the Moon taken from Earth. The final landing site was chosen from among those photographed by the lunar orbiters.

Each orbiter camara was used for a single Lunar mission. After photographing the selected sites, it was directed to record other areas of interest, including the Moon's far side, until they were out of unexposed film or the equipment became inoperable for some other reason. Each mission ended with a command from Ground Control to de-orbit and crash on the Moon's surface, to avoid interference with subsequent missions
